The historical marker was placed in 1947 by the Standard Oil Company of California, which may not have known of a station in St. Louis that claimed to have opened in 1905. That station has no marker (its site is now buried under Interstate 64), and both are disputed by a 1913 station in Pittsburgh, whose supporters dismiss the 1905 and 1907 locations as nothing more than solitary pumps with garden hoses.
