Roebling Bridge

Go, drive over the bridge, drive back over again. Park, walk down to the water and take a walk over the bridge walk back on the other side. Today was such beautiful weather and it was so nice to be there and walk around... don't forget to read the historic posts from when it all began.

I love this bridge. It's right off Rt 97, a 20 minute amazing drive from Port Jervis NY. Crossing it is like stepping back in time. Be careful, as it only can fit one direction at a time, so cars take turns crossing over the Delaware River.

Roebling Bridge

This historic landmark is also known as Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct. It is the oldest existing suspension bridge of its type, and is 535 feet long. The bridge now carries motor vehicles and pedestrians (one lane only), but when it was built the internal area of the bridge was filled with six feet of water and it carried barges. There were towpaths for mules to pull the barges.

John A. Roebling built the aqueduct for the D&H Canal in 1847 (He would go on to build the Brooklyn Bridge). The water was drained and the aqueduct turned into a bridge when the Canal closed in 1898.
