A life-size black bear, reared on its hind legs, carved from wood by an unknown artist, greets visitors to a trail that used to be a state highway.

From Chesapeake drive south on US Hwy 17 for 6.5 miles. Turn right at the brown highway sign for the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. Drive a half-mile, then turn left. Drive another half-mile until the road ends. You'll see Chessie straight ahead.

This is a large, carved wood sculpture of "Chessie" the black bear standing on its hind legs. Sculpted by an unknown local artist. Chessie greets visitors as they enter the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, an interesting 8.5-mile biking and hiking path created from a retired highway.
