We happened upon Echo Park on a busy day with a festival going on. It was busy but clean, and a great stop.

Whole park was closed, cleaned and reopened in 2014. The park is lovely and safe now. There are paddle boats you can rent and take to the island, but you can't walk on it as to protect the wildlife that resides there.

The real Gilligan's Island - Vague Recollections

The outdoor scenes on "Gilligan's Island" were filmed on a little island in Echo Park in Los Angeles. I went there in 1980 and intended to cross the little arched bridge so I could walk on the same ground trod by Gilligan and his friends. Alas, sinister looking men were on the island eyeing the obvious tourist, otherwise known as prey, who suddenly lost interest in seeing the island up close. It's the only time I ever got a picture of people who were planning to mug me.
