Burl was born nearby. His tombstone praises the actor-singer-writer as "adapted to all media" and "Equally at home before the royalty of Europe and the farm folk of Midwestern USA." Though he recorded lots of songs and acted in many films, he is perhaps most familiar to modern audiences as the voice of the narrating/singing snowman ("Holly Jolly Christmas") in the animated Christmas special "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer."
