Urban bat colony roosts in a diversion channel along the Arizona Canal. Bat swarm at dusk lasts 45 minutes. Official viewing area has explanatory signs. Wear a hat to repel bat poop.

Directions:
Northeast side of the city, on the west side of N. 40th St. just north of its intersection with E. Camelback Rd (Nearest parking is on the south side of the canal, at the intersection of 40th St. and Camelback Rd). From 40th St. walk west on the dirt trail on the north side of the Arizona Canal. Walk past several office buildings and a parking garage, then turn right. You'll see a paved path that continues west. Follow it to a viewing area with interpretive signs. Bats swarm at sunset and sunrise.

The official bat viewing area includes explanatory signs. The best time to visit is from May through October -- just before sunset, some of the 5,000 bats start to emerge for their nightly insect dining.
