In 1931 Amelia Earhart was married secretly to preserve her image as an independent woman, and in a secret location to throw reporters off the trail. A commemorative plaque on the Latham Chester Store Museum (now an art gallery) in Noank claims that it is the spot. It isn't.
She was actually married at a square house owned by her great grandfather at 45 Church St., a few blocks away. Adding to the confusion, some sources suggest that she was married in a mansion a few houses away from the square house, at 25 Church St., but the woman at the historical society told us this was a real estate agent's marketing ploy to add value to the mansion.
In any event, the square house is the dumpiest house in Noank, as the woman at the historical society pointed out.
