Powell spent his youth in Jackson, but the Powell Memorial is not his boyhood home. It was built in the 1930s of stones and slabs donated by various "tribes" of the Improved Order of Red Men, a fraternal organization (of white men) that felt inspired by the famous 19th century explorer.
