Murder Site of Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner
The historical marker was originally placed in 2009 near the site where the murders took place. Then it disappeared and someone found it dumped at the Mt Zion Methodist Church. Who would not want the marker erected near them?! A new marker has been installed.

Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner were "Freedom Summer" activists investigating the burning of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, where they had earlier encouraged blacks to vote. They were shot dead by a white lynch mob on June 21, 1964. In 2017, Joe Smith wrote to tell us about the sign's disappearance: "An auto accident destroyed the sign. The sheriff had the sign in storage while a new one was made."
