The Rocking Stone is a natural glacier deposit atop a huge boulder, and used to be so well balanced that it would move at the touch of a finger. In 1895, entrepreneur C.F. McGlashan built a tower there as a tourist attraction, where he also displayed his butterfly collection and relics from the Donner Party disaster. The historical marker on the stone was installed in 1967 by E Clampus Vitus, re-dedicated in 1977.
