70 years after Indiana sent Chief Menominee and his followers on the Trail of Death, the state felt guilty and erected this statue. It's out in the country, on a secondary road; an unusual place for a statue.

Very beautiful! Recommend seeing it in the fall when the leaves are all over the ground.

This statue was dedicated in 1909 to Chief Menominee and the Pottawattomie tribe at the start of the Trail of Death. In 1838 the entire tribe was rounded up over several days and sent west by the Indiana government.

The statue, by sculptor John Novelli, was unveiled on Sep. 4, 1909, by the granddaughter of Chief Menominee. At the time it was "the only statue of an Indian chief ever paid for by a state legislature." Nov. 2017: Photo added.
