Springer, Oklahoma: Magnetic Hill

Most of the traffic on this small, rural road will probably be people like you, testing its ability to make your car roll uphill. The mysterious "magnetic" force is said to be strong enough to crash a plane!

Address:
Pioneer Rd, Springer, OK
Directions:
I-35 exit 42. Drive west 1.5 miles on Hwy 53. Turn right (north) onto Pioneer/Pit Rd. Drive one mile. You'll reach the bottom of the hill when you see gravel washed onto the blacktop. Stop, put your car in neutral, and you'll be pulled backwards, uphill (Note: up ahead you'll see the road veer sharply to the right, but if you reach this turn you've gone too far). This is a lightly traveled road, but please use your emergency flashers and be alert for other vehicles.

Magnetic Hill

There are two lines currently painted on the road -- a green line (with a smiley face man saying hi) marking where to start and a blue line that seems to be where it stops. If you go about 20 feet in front of the green line, you'll have a better, more obvious, start and get up to a higher speed while being pulled backwards up the hill.

We tried this over a dozen times from different spots on the hill and this gave us the best result topping at 13 mph instead of 1-2mph at the green line.

It does work. However, if you drive a Prius, I'll tell you these cars don't want to move, but it kept the car still on the uphill, and then it slowly started to pull and worked.

Very cool, the kids were very impressed. And once backed up on the top of the hill, we didn't roll back down the hill.

You have to try it to believe it! We were so impressed we did it four times. My Yukon got up to 12 mph in neutral going backwards. The directions were very accurate. I took a picture to help.

I made it more fun by telling my kids about the ancient native American spirits who used to live on the land and don't want visitors, so they will push your car out and up. Freaked them out.
