Sequoia National Park, California: Home in a Log
Hale Tharp lived in a cabin he carved out of a fallen giant sequoia from 1861 to 1890. You can still peek in the dusty widows and see his very rustic furniture.

- From Hwy 198/Generals Hwy at the Giant Forest Museum, turn east onto Crescent Meadow Rd. Drive 2.5 miles to the parking lot at the end of the road, then follow the walking trail to "Tharps Log" for about one mile.
