The price is now $15 per car, but still worth the stop. Very steep trails.
[Jamie Rinne, 02/08/2018]The visitor center is currently closed for updating. There is a temporary building being used until the renovation is completed so the educational video is unavailable. There is a cost of $7 per vehicle to drive up the volcano. The hike to the center is .2 miles the hike around the rim is 1 mile. We find it a fun way to stretch our legs.

Capulin Volcano is worth taking note of as you drive by. If you have time there's a paved road that spirals around the volcano, and visitors can drive up to a parking lot at the rim. Hiking trails circle the rim as well as lead down into the mouth of the volcano. The visitor center features exhibits about the volcano and the area's geology, natural and cultural history, and offers educational programs about volcanoes. There is also a video presentation about the volcano.

- Capulin Volcano National Monument. Nine miles west of Des Moines on US Hwy 64/87, between mileposts 377 and 378. From US Hwy 64/87 turn north onto Hwy 325. Drive three miles. Turn right onto the crater rim drive.
