June 7, 1982: Graceland Opens

Graceland Opens: June 7, 1982

Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, opened to the public as a tourist attraction 40 years ago on June 7, 1982. It's a near-obligatory pilgrimage spot for all earthlings, and Elvis has always been there for his fans, buried in the backyard. His house seems quaint -- almost -- when compared to today's sprawling celebrity mansions. With personal touches such as carpet on the ceiling, The King set the standard for over-the-top decor -- lovingly preserved to dazzle generation after generation. Elvis remains so big that the attraction has spilled across the street, displaying relics such as the bongos Priscilla gave him for Christmas, and the television set he blew away with a bullet in Palm Springs.

Everyone should go!

40+ year after his death, and Elvis Presley's Graceland and family grave site endure as a vacation destination.

Christmas in Graceland.

Graceland

This is the coolest place I've ever been in North America. I thought the Colosseum in Rome and the Roman Baths in Bath were cooler, but that's about it. You should go even if you're not an Elvis fan. As long as you like places that are awesome, you will love Graceland.
