Bowling Green, Kentucky: National Corvette Museum

Exhibits include 80+ Corvettes. In 2014 a sinkhole opened beneath the central dome, swallowing eight cars. The five most damaged Corvettes were kept as-is for display, and a "Corvette Cave-In!" exhibit opened in 2016.

Great exhibit, plus the explanation of the cave and sinkhole.

The sinkhole in the showroom of the museum has been filled in. My group was disappointed because we came more to see the sinkhole than see the pristine Corvettes. But the trashed cars are still on display. And the other Corvettes are beautiful to see.

The Museum is aware of the popularity of its lost hole, and is building a "Sinkhole Experience" attraction to debut in 2016.

Great seeing the sink hole and the cars!

National Corvette Museum

On February 12, 2014, a massive sinkhole opened in the center of the Skydome at the National Corvette Museum, swallowing eight show cars, including both the 1 millionth and 1.5 millionth Corvette. It wasn't until April 9 that the last of the cars was hauled from the surprisingly deep hole. Some, such as the 1.5 millionth Corvette, had been flattened and mangled into barely recognizable wrecks.

It was all very sad -- but then the museum noticed something unexpected. Attendance had soared 56 percent from the previous year. People liked looking at the wrecked cars! So the museum decided to keep all eight battered Corvettes on display through the summer, and then leave the most badly damaged cars unrepaired as permanent Corvette Museum showpiece artifacts.
