I stopped into town on my way to Champaign. Danville is a midwestern town of many out here, albeit better than some, so these little sparks of light and hope are still important. I found it more special today than I would have a few months ago before Gene Hackman's death.

Outdoor wall mural, created by artist Andy Goretski, pays homage to six former Danvillians that became world-famous in the entertainment industry: Dick and Jerry Van Dyke, Gene Hackman, Donald O'Conner, Bobby Short, and Helen Morgan. The mural faces the historic Fischer Theatre, where these stars began their careers.

All six were born between the years 1900 and 1931. The youngest, Jerry Van Dyke, played the lead in the TV series "My Mother the Car."
