Very interesting place, but visitors are no longer allowed to hit golf balls into the pit due to an insurance liability (effective 7/24/2021).

Viewing deck overlooks the historic Homestake Mine open cut, a very impressive giant hole in the ground, where gold was mined from 1876-2001. You can drive a golf ball into the open cut from the Visitor Center, whose exhibits focus on the Sanford Underground Research Facility, where ongoing physics experiments regarding neutrinos and dark matter occur in the former depths of the mine.
