Rebel Tunnel of Chetoogeta Mountain

Why call it "Rebel Tunnel?" Never heard of that name, which is almost offensive. The estate which is part of the tour was owned by a rather progressive gentleman who I believe supported the Union.

[Rodger Ling, 05/18/2021]

The tunnel was dug in Antebellum times and became a key supply link for the Confederacy between Chattanooga and Atlanta. The "Great Locomotive Chase" of 1862 passed through it.

It was built so fast [in less than two years]. And "The General" locomotive chase passed through it.

[Laydon, 09/17/2016]

Ride a tram through the 1,500-foot-long tunnel, which is narrow and not for the claustrophobic. It was abandoned in 1928, then restored and opened to the public in 2000. Also here: the grave of rebel General Hood's leg.
