[Sarah Danford, 08/22/2019]

Nat Turner, a slave, led a slave revolt in 1831 that didn't extend very far, but nevertheless resulted in the murders of scores of whites. As was the case in all slave revolts, whites exacted revenge that was even worse. Some slaves had their heads chopped off and stuck on poles along roads in the area, as a warning against any further rebellion. One of those roads still carries the name, "Blackhead Signpost Road." Unlike most grisly urban legends, this story is unfortunately true.
