The Space Syrup may not be on public display much longer. Gray's Sugarhouse in Ashfield, Massachusetts, home of the First Maple Syrup in Outer Space , is closing at the end of the sugar season this year after 41 years in business. The Gray family will continue to produce maple syrup and maple products. When I asked Lyle Gray, son of family patriarch Willie Gray, he said that the Space Syrup would remain untouched as a souvenir of the space shuttle Discovery. Right now it's in a little vitrine by the cash register, complete with a Discovery patch.
[L.J. Evans, 03/05/2002]Gray's Sugarhouse has two small containers of maple syrup that were taken up by local astronaut Dan Barry during a space shuttle flight. They're behind the counter at the cash register. As far anyone knows, this is the first maple syrup to go into space.
