The donkey and the footprints are right in front of a great Ruth Chris Steakhouse that occupies Boston's old city hall. It's on School Street, which is the site of the oldest public school in the U.S. It is next to King's Chapel, where William Dawes, Paul Reveres partner on his famous ride, is buried.

The donkey was imported from Florence, Italy, as a piece of public art for children, but city officials refused to accept it. Its supporters then suggested that it could represent the Democratic Party, and Boston agreed to erect it outside Old City Hall, a former Democratic stronghold. Republicans then demanded that Boston erect an elephant. Rather than pay for an elephant, the city installed the footprints.
