Macon, Georgia: Allman Brothers Caged Party Graves

The graves of Allman Brothers band members Berry Oakley, Duane and Gregg Allman, and Butch Trucks have been locked behind a tall fence to prevent rock 'n' roll fans from doing stuff to (and on) them.

The Allman Brothers burial site is at the right side of the cemetery, near back railroad tracks. When tracks are on your right, look left for brick stairs and iron fencing. The office was closed when we came.

Berry Oakley and Duane Allman's Graves

A bright young man named Duane Allman made music that went on to be known as southern blues rock, along with band mates Jaimoe, Berry Oakley, and brother Greg Allman.

Duane and Greg attended Georgia Military College Primary and secondary schools, located in Milledgeville, GA just down the road. Capricorn Records started in Macon in 1969, with the signing of the Allman brothers band as their hallmark group.

Duane Died in October of 1971 in a motorcycle accident when he collided with a truck. Barry died November 1972, also on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, Barry hit a city bus. Coincidentally, the accidents were only four blocks from each other.

Barry and Duane are buried next to each other in Rose Hill Cemetery, overlooking the river.

Tipster Bob Wyman wrote to let us know (2016) that Duane Alllman didn't actually hit the truck, but veered behind it and then lost control of his motorcycle. He fell underneath his bike, and it killed him.

Directions:
Rose Hill Cemetery. I-16 exits 1A or IB. Drive across the river and turn right onto Riverside Drive. The cemetery will come up quickly on the right. The graves are back by the train tracks; a sign on the door of the cemetery office gives directions to the Allman graves.
