720 Quartzite pillars were placed every half-mile to mark the line between North and South Dakota. Known as the "Quartzite Border," it was the only state boundary marked in this fashion. The pillar in Pierre has been turned into a monument and stands in front of the South Dakota State Historical Society Museum, roughly 100 miles south of the state line it's supposed to mark.
