Amboy, California: Lines of Pyramids

Hundreds of large pyramidal mounds extend in lines across a dry lake bed -- the dried muck from local salt mining.

Directions:
On the west side of Amboy, turn south off of Route 66 onto Amboy Rd. Drive south 2.5 miles. You'll see the pyramidal mounds on the left as you drive by.

A Line of Pyramids

Just south of Amboy I noticed several lines of pyramids that extend across Bristol Dry Lake. A brochure from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management explained that the pyramidal mounds are part of two large, active salt mines that produce much of the sodium and sodium chloride used in high school chemistry classes.
