Redstone, Colorado: Redstone Coke Ovens
Roughly 40 large dome-shaped outdoor ovens are in a line right next to the highway. They're relics from the 1800s, used to roast coal into coke for making iron.

The Coke Ovens are right next to the highway. Restoration has returned a few of them to their heyday glory. The rest are in various states of decay. There is an information sign to explain it all.

There are substantial coal deposits around Redstone, ideal for refining coal into coke. At the end of the 19th century about two hundred coke ovens were built in the nearby mountains. Unfortunately, only a few of have survived. The coke ovens at Redstone are smaller and more numerous than most of the wood processing coke ovens found in western United States.
