Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Last Slabs of the Seedling Mile

Paved in the summer of 1919. According to its plaque, it was "the first and only Seedling Mile of concrete pavement in the state of Iowa on the Lincoln Highway."

Lincoln Heights Drive SE, Cedar Rapids, IA
East of the city. US Hwy 30 exit 259. Drive north on US Hwy 151 for 3.5 miles. Turn left at the stoplight onto Mt Vernon Rd. Drive west two miles. You'll see the white West Bertram Fire Dept. shed on the right (And the Seedling Highway kiosk). Turn right just past the shed onto Wilder Drive, then right again onto Lincoln Heights Drive SE. Last Slabs of the Seedling Mile

Interesting local history. If you blink you'll miss it. I would not drive out-of-the-way for this, but if you were on your way it is full of "gee-whiz" history. The concrete mixture is definitely different than what we use today.

[Russ & Annette, 07/05/2017]

The Seedling Mile was a gimmick to show taxpayers how nice the Lincoln Highway would be if taxpayers would pay to pave all the other miles. The Highway was eventually rerouted, leaving this tiny blocked-off original section abandoned and, now, preserved as a monument.
