The first UPC (barcode) was scanned in June 1974, at a grocery store in Troy. The 67-cent pack of gum is on display at the Smithsonian, but you can still go through the checkout and buy your own souvenir pack of Juicy Fruit to take home. A framed mayoral proclamation commemorating the event is on the inside wall near the exit.
