- White Sands National Park. From Alamogordo drive west on US Hwy 70 for 13.5 miles. Entrance on right. The park is sometimes closed during missile tests, so call ahead. Bring a hat and plenty of bottled water.

Beautiful, dog-friendly National Park! Dogs are allowed everywhere except the buildings. My pup loved the wide open spaces, and the white sand wasn't hot on his paws, at least on our visit in early October. Dogs must be leashed at all times, of course. The landscape truly is other-worldly.
[Brenda Shackleford, 10/18/2023]We had a ton of fun! I strongly recommend those round, plastic saucer sleds. We had a wooden one and a snowboard and both were too heavy. Although it could have been the recent rain.
[Angie, 02/19/2023]According to a ranger there, multiple Hollywood projects have been filmed at the park, including such classics as Year One and Tank Girl. Aerial shots are no longer allowed after a helicopter shooting a Boyz II Men music video drifted a little too close to a classified project at the neighboring Air Force base.
