Rides are given three times a day in season and length varies with mule mood (our guide said that 40 minutes is average, but a mule in a bad mood could make the trip an hour or longer). Admission cost includes the historic home tour and grounds (doughnut shaped burial mound, etc.), so it's a pretty good deal.

At the Johnston Farm and Indian Agency, visitors can ride a flatboat on a restored section of the Miami and Erie Canal. Construction on the canal began in 1825 and ended in 1845. It was approximately 275 miles long and linked Cincinnati to Toledo. Travel along the canal was by flatboats pulled by mules walking along a towpath. The canal was used until a major flood in 1913 made it impassable and too costly to repair. The Johnston site has a restored a two-mile section, and a reproduction flatboat travels it three times a day, pulled by a mule.
