It looks more like a half-buried garage than a fort, and it was built to repulse an Indian attack that never came.

- Northwest edge of town. Drive north to Summit Ave. and turn west. When you pass the cemetery on the left, turn left onto the dirt track. Drive to the top of the hill; you'll see the fort.

High on the hilltop, the fort sits overlooking the town cemetery. Take the circular dirt road to the top for an up close look.

Locals in the 1800s feared "hostile" Indians had escaped a nearby reservation and planned to attack the town. In a panic, locals shipped most of the women and children off to Bismarck and built a fort out of sod and railroad ties, which now sits atop a hill overlooking a German-American cemetery and the town. The Indian attack never materialized, but the peculiar fort remains.
