The cookie was invented when Mrs. Wakefield of the Toll House Inn accidentally substituted chocolate chunks for the nuts that she usually put in her cookies. The new cookies were a hit and eventually came to the attention of Nestle. A deal was worked out whereby Nestle would supply Mrs. Wakefield with a lifetime supply of chocolate in exchange for allowing the company to place her recipe on their chocolate chip bags.
The inn burned down in 1984 and all that is left is the sign and a bronze historical plaque.
