Amber, Iowa: Hula Hoop Tree (Gone)

A unique sub-variety of the classic Shoe Tree, this dead roadside cottonwood has had its branches hung with colorful hula hoops by passing travelers since 2015. Cut down in April 2020.

Directions:
A quarter-mile west of Amber, on the north side of E23 County Home Rd. Be careful; there's no place to park.

Local officials worried that the tree, which was dead, would fall on a passing car or hoop-tossing tourist, so they chopped it down.

There is a tree along the road where Hula Hoops are placed. You can bring your own, or re-hang some that have fallen from the tree.
