Bunyan Muffler Man
Now both of the Elmsford NY Bunyan Muffler Man's arms have gone AWOL. The sheer torment of not being able to scratch your own bum must be overwhelming. So sad.
[Rachael, 08/14/2007]Gas Station Bunyan
Gas may be costing the rest of us an arm and a leg, but this Paul Bunyan Muffler Man has thus far only sacrificed an arm -- artfully hidden by the station's sign placement. The arm has been missing, by most accounts, since the era of the original Gas Crisis -- the 1970s.
Paul Bunyan is smartly rendered in British Petroleum brand colors, right down to a pair of bright green eyes. Less brand-compliant is a tangled banner tied around his shins advertising Corona Extra beer. A spent Corona bottle lay in the dirt around his boots, which were half buried in a planter.
The locale struck us as busy but patriotic, with American flags aflutter above the gas pump island and elsewhere. There's a flag business in the building behind the Muffler Man.
