When I was a little girl in the 1960s, my mother would stop at this little church and we'd go in and pray. It was very meaningful to me. When my daughter was a little girl in the 1980s, I'd stop when we passed through this town. We would go in and pray. I would always cry since it reminded me of my mother, who passed away in my teens. Now, my daughter and I have had the privilege to stop with our daughter/granddaughter. Four generations. This is a special place.

Highway 56 roadside memorial dedicated to the first church in Garfield, Kansas. James Garfield was the 20th President and was honored by local citizens who named their community after him. He gave them a bell for their church. The church is now gone, but what remains are its front step, bell, cornerstone, and a tiny chapel along the highway.

The front step is underneath the historical sign that stands next to the chapel. There's a tiny model of the church inside the tiny chapel, and its cornerstone is set into the chapel's wall. It looks as if it was a substantial church, but it was torn down in 1911.
