Worcester, Massachusetts: Deed to God Rock

Solomon Parsons Jr. carved a 215-word deed into a rock in 1840, conveying the surrounding ten acres to God. Some of the words are still legible.

Swan Ave., Worcester, MA
Northwest of the city. From Hwy 9/Main St. turn north onto Apricot St., then make a quick right onto Wildwood Ave. Drive three-quarters of a mile. Turn left onto Swan Ave., a narrow dirt road into the woods. Drive a half-mile. You'll pass a house with a paved driveway on the left. The road veers sharply right. Follow it a hundred yards and you'll see a pull-off on the right. Park, and on the left side of the road look for a weathered board nailed to a tree, "Deed Rock," pointing to the trail into the trees. The rock is only a short walk in.
