On September 5, 1716, Lt. Governor Spotswood crossed west over the Blue Ridge Mountains and came upon the Shenandoah Valley. Spotswood gave all of the members of his expedition a Golden Horseshoe when they got back home. This was commemorated with a pyramid and marble plaque erected in 1921 by the Colonial Dames of America. Right next to the pyramid is a big rock with a poem about Spotswood's adventure.
