The Muffler Man is still standing, but no longer holding an axe.

This Bunyan-style Muffler Man was probably made around 1964 or '65 and stood at a carpet store in Port Hueneme. The place closed and turned into an auto part store in the late '60s, but the Bunyan stayed. In the mid-1970s the Bunyan was moved to the outskirts of town and stood by himself down by a river in the Foster Park area. Out of sight, he attracted almost no attention for many years, but he was not forgotten by the locals.
In 2016 he was purchased and moved a mile or so down the road. He was repainted and set up in the backyard of a private residence. I took this picture the day the Thomas Fire started, which he survived.
