There is a large turkey statue in front of the HEB grocery store on US Highway 87. The turkey represents the mascot of Cuero High School. Cuero also claims (along with Worthington, Minnesota) to be the Turkey Capital of the World. For many years the cities have participated in the Great Gobbler Gallup to take home the Travelling Turkey Trophy of Tumultuous Triumph for the year. Cuero's turkey is always named Ruby Begonia.
