The Old Globe Theatre was built in 1935 as part of the California Pacific International Exhibition. It was a copy of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. After the Exhibition the community made the temporary structure permanent. In 1978 it burned down, just as Shakespeare's original Globe did in 1599. The community rallied again and rebuilt the Old Globe Theatre, which still stages Shakespeare plays in Balboa Park.
