Indianapolis, Indiana: USS Indianapolis: Sunk A-Bomb Ship Memorial
Monument in the shape of the USS Indianapolis. After completing its secret mission delivering A-bomb components, the cruiser was torpedoed and sunk on July 30, 1945. Of 1,196 sailors, only 317 survived after days in shark-infested waters.

The heavy cruiser and city namesake was built in 1930, fought in World War II, was damaged in Japanese attacks, secretly delivered the atomic bomb, and was torpedoed in the Pacific while returning home. In 2017 the shipwreck was found -- 3 1/2 miles down in the Philippine Sea.
