250 American mercenaries, convinced that Canada should be part of the U.S., fought a bloody battle here in November 1838. Nearly half ended up dead, or captured and later banished to penal colonies in Australia. Canada stayed Canada.

- Battle of the Windmill National Historic Site. Midway between Prescott to the west and Johnstown to the east. From Hwy 2 turn south onto Windmill Rd at the Battle of the Windmill sign. The windmill is now a lighthouse.
