Moorhead Dairy Queen

Heritage items you will find here (but not at other DQs) include sandwiches, drinks, and ice cream novelties.

[Patrick Southam, 08/07/2019]

The Moorhead Dairy Queen is known as the birthplace of the ice cream novelty Dilly Bar. That occurred in 1955, and time has stood still in parts of this DQ ever since (though in the 1950s no one cared about calories).

I've lived just across the river for three years and never knew this gem was there! It's a fun sight. The DQ was closed for the winter, but the Dilly Bar was still standing proud.

World's Largest Dilly Bar

A Dilly Bar is basically swirled soft-serve ice cream on a stick dipped in a candy coating. It was invented at the Moorhead Dairy Queen in 1955. The Moorhead DQ is known as a "rogue" DQ, operating outside of the confines of a traditional franchise store. It features many home-made and off-menu items and only provides outdoor seating. Every year it opens on March 1st, regardless of the weather.

It recently installed a giant Dilly Bar to commemorate itself as the birthplace of this treat.
