Florence, Alabama: Outlaw Buried Beneath Road

Outlaw Tom Clark once bragged that "no one would run over Tom Clark." He was lynched, and then buried beneath what is now a busy five-lane highway. A historical marker next to the road tells his story,
E. Tennessee St., Florence, AL
East edge of town. The historical marker is on the south side of E. Tennessee St., between the highway and the wall surrounding Florence City Cemetery. It's just east of a highway sign overhanging the westbound lanes. Don't try to stand on the grave; it's a busy road.

Buried in the Middle of the Road

"Mountain" Tom Clark was a gang leader who terrorized the folks of Florence during and after the Civil War. He murdered 19 people including a child. He also bragged that "no one would run over Tom Clark." He was apprehended and thrown into the city jail. Then the people of Florence broke into the jail, dragged Clark out, and hung him from the closest tree. They already had Clark's grave dug in a nearby field, but he had so angered the townspeople that they buried him in the middle of the road.
