Birthplace of Memorial Day

Memorial Day Place, located right in downtown Waterloo, commemorates the federal recognition of Waterloo as the first town to hold official Memorial Day celebrations. There is also a Memorial Day museum down the street, which was closed for Memorial Day when we arrived.

President Lyndon B. Johnson and the U.S. Congress officially recognized Waterloo's birthplace of Memorial Day claim in May 1966.
