Willkie ran for President in 1940, but lost to FDR. Had he won, it might have been awkward, as both he and his VP-nominee died before the next election in 1944.

As the only native Hoosier ever nominated for the Presidency by a major political party, Wendell L. Willkie and his campaign manager (also his wife), Edith Willkie, set up the headquarters of his 1940 Presidential campaign in the Durbin Hotel. The Durbin is currently under renovation to become an apartment complex titled "Campaign Quarters." Willkie is buried in East Hill Cemetery.
