I had no knowledge of Clifford Brown before coming to this cool memorial. It's in a pretty spot by the Brandywine River in a historically African American neighborhood near French Street. The sensors under the benches in the inner circle were triggered by a dog walking by. The sound was marvelous and we stayed long enough to hear two of his recordings that inspired awe!
This spot is well taken care of and next to an amphitheater built for city festivals including Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in August. Fans can see the High School he attended right down the street. Thanks to RA and this visit, Im a new fan. We rode to our next spot hard bopping to Clifford Brown all the way!
[Dirty Martini, 01/30/2025]A small park along the Brandywine River commemorates one of the greatest American jazz trumpeters of all time, Clifford Brown of Wilmington. The park features music-themed mosaics and stone benches surrounding a 14-foot stone sculpture, "Twin Obelisks for Brownie." If the motion detectors are working, you'll hear a random track of Clifford Brown's music from speakers nearby.
