Directions:
I-95 exit 302. Drive north on US Hwy 1 for 37 miles. Turn left (west) onto Spragueville Rd at the Aroostook Union Grange. Drive 1.5 miles. You'll see the memorial, inside a white picket fence, on the left.

Double Eagle II Balloon Site

A balloon-shaped monument commemorates the first successful transatlantic balloon crossing. In 1978, Double Eagle II was the first manned hot air balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The three-man crew took off from Presque Isle and traveled 3,099 miles in 137 hours and 6 minutes to land in Miserey, France. The balloon gondola is displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
