Austinville, Virginia: Shot Tower
Built in the early 1800s. Balls for bullets were made by pouring hot lead from the top of the tower. Shorter than other surviving shot towers, because half of its length is underground.

- Shot Tower State Park. I-77 exit 24. Drive east on VA-69/Lead Mine Rd. At the stop sign, turn left onto US Hwy 52. Drive 1.5 miles. Turn left onto VA-624. At the stop sign drive straight intonthe park; you'll see the Shot Tower ahead.

- Dawn-dusk. Gated after hours. Ranger-led tower climb by appt. (Call to verify) Local health policies may affect hours and access.

Our family enjoyed a tour at the Shot Tower, and a nice hike along the New River Trail to Foster Falls.

Great place to stop when on the road. We stopped there years ago the first time, when the kids needed to run off some energy. Nice, safe parking lot and great spot to have a picnic and stretch your legs while learning about some interesting history.
