The Forest Gift Shop was built of local rocks in 1938 when all traffic crossing Donner Summit came along Old Highway 40. According to a historical placard next to the ruins, its best-sellers were corncob pipes and owl ashtrays made from pinecones. The small fruit stand next to it sold orange juice. Both went out of business when Interstate 80 sucked away all of the Highway 40 traffic, and the ruins were donated to the county in 2008.
